The Middlesex County Museum & Historical Society is pleased to have on display a collection of fossilized bones and shells on loan by a local resident.
Along the shores of the Piankatank River, near the site of an 1800’s trash dump, is a Miocene layer of soil. Within this site, fossilized bone fragments emerge along with bottles and shells, and small whole scallop shells from the Rappahannock River along with a clam casement are found. A natural Gypsum Crystal “Desert Rose,” fossilized horse teeth, a portion of a whale flipper and other “finds” surface.
